I'm so proud of my two older daughters for being there! (With the secret hidden agenda-now let this be a lesson, young ladies! … but then, of course, another lesson that is quite beyond words …)
Thanks Liz! Yes, I had the girls call my parents to let them know we were at the hospital and my mother was quite taken aback that the girls were there. Not so much in a bad way, but what a translation shock. Even with me in 1971 the thought of even having just my dad in the room was just unheard of.
The Tibetans, or so I have heard, have a tradition of familiarizing children with death from early on. That's sometimes shocking enough in our Western culture, but children and all human beings should be familiarized with birth too, every bit as much. This is who and what we are. And at least as far as I am concerned there is a certain centuric wisdom to the idea …
But I definitely loved that the girls had this chance especially -and that Mom could have them there with her. 'twas a time when that was how it was done. There' just something very, very deep about the whole thing.
And this was a pretty Integral birth. Dad's there now, thanks to Green, and we had both a doula and an OB -we were able to reap the benefits of a lot of the best of all worlds. We had the modern medical support that was necessary with this particular case, but were also able to integrate natural styles, etc. I really am very happy. And I think Katie's … smile says a lot.
Mazel Tov!

Yeah, that was pretty much the best possible outcome, huh? Fantastic.
